Iodine a a naturally occurring element which is essential in the body for many functions. It is the main ingredient in all of the thyroid hormones, which are responsible for the maintenance of metabolism and energy expenditure. Abnormal levels of iodine can lead to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Iodine levels are usually measured once there has been an abnormal TSH, T3 or T4 test. This test measures the amount of iodine in a 24-hour sample of urine, which gives a more accurate measurement of the amount of iodine in the body.
